Deck removal

Boards, frame, posts and footings out, and the house wall the deck was fixed to left properly closed.

When people call us about deck removal

  • A deck is rotten, soft underfoot or failing
  • A new deck or patio is going in and the old one is in the way
  • You are extending and the deck is inside the footprint
  • An inspection has flagged the structure

What deck removal covers

  • Timber, composite and PVC decking
  • Joists, beams, posts and railings
  • Concrete footings and post bases
  • Stairs, skirting and lattice
  • Detaching the ledger from the house and sealing the fixing line

The ledger board is where the damage usually is

The board bolting the deck to the house is the most common point of failure and the most common source of hidden rot in the wall behind it. It is also where water gets in once the deck is off. We take it off properly, look at what is behind it, tell you what we find, and seal the line so the wall is not left open. A deck removal that ends with a row of unsealed bolt holes is not finished.

How deck removal runs

The same order every time, whatever the scale.

We walk the site

We look at what is coming out, what is staying, and how we get to it. Access decides most of the plan in this city: a fourth-floor walk-up and a loading dock are two different jobs even when the scope is identical.

We tell you which filing you need

Full structure, interior gut, or work small enough to sit outside a filing. You get a straight answer on which path applies and what it needs before we quote, not after you have committed.

Asbestos gets settled first

Anything built before April 1987 needs an asbestos assessment before a permit is issued. We arrange the investigator and the ACP-5 filing. This is the step that most often moves a start date, so we start it early.

We protect, then we start

Floors, stairs, lift lobbies and anything staying get covered before a tool comes out. Utilities are proved dead. Then the work runs in a set order, with the route material takes out of the building settled before any of it moves.

You get the site back clean

Loads leave covered, to a permitted transfer station, with documentation for each one. We sweep out and hand over a space the next trade can start in.

What moves the price on deck removal

Every one of these moves the number, so you can see what a quote is actually responding to — and tell us the ones you already know when you call.

  • Deck area and height above ground
  • Whether the footings come out or stay
  • Composite versus timber, which changes the disposal route
  • Access to the rear of the property
  • Condition of the wall behind the ledger, once it is visible

Deck removal: your questions

Do the concrete footings have to come out?

If the ground is being reclaimed or built on, yes. If a new deck is going back on the same layout, sometimes they can be reused. Your new deck builder should confirm that before we take them out.

What if there is rot in the wall behind?

You will see it as soon as we do, with photos. Repairing it is carpentry rather than demolition, but leaving it hidden under new sealant would be the wrong thing to do.

Can composite decking be recycled?

It goes on a different route from clean timber because it is a mixed material. It is separated on site rather than going into a general load.
